A Durant High School junior was killed in a traffic crash Sunday near her home in Cedar County, the Iowa State Patrol said Monday.

Emily Anne Bohnsack, 16, of Wilton, Iowa, was driving a vehicle that was hit in the driver’s side by an oncoming vehicle at the intersection of 310th Street and Yankee Avenue, Trooper Erik Fitzer said.

The accident occurred at 12:15 p.m. Bohnsack, who was alone, was eastbound on 310th and did not stop her 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee at the stop sign, pulling into the path of the vehicle heading south on Yankee, according to an Iowa State Patrol accident report. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was hit by Devin Warner, 41, of Bennett, Iowa, who was driving a Ford F-250 pickup. He was not injured.

Fitzer said both drivers were wearing seat belts. There are no charges filed at this time.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating why Bohnsack’s vehicle did not stop. Fitzer said 310th, a gravel road, was “snow and ice packed” while the paved Yankee Avenue was clear at the time of the accident.

Cedar County Sheriff Warren Wethington called the accident “a bad deal” and said with slick roads and increased traffic in the holiday season, drivers need to “take more time and stop and think farther down the road” before coming to an intersection.

Bohnsack was active in choir, basketball, golf and volleyball at her high school, according to her obituary.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Wilton, where she was active in the youth group. She was a member of Wilton Young Life, Durant Force Volleyball Club,  Inland 4-H, Muscatine Saddle Club and Iowa Quarter Horse Youth Association, her obituary states.

“Above all, she loved spending time with her friends and family,” her obituary states.

Bohnsack won awards during the years she showed her horse Buddy in local, state and regional American Quarter Horse Association shows, her obituary states.

Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Wilton. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s. Burial will be at Durant Cemetery.
