DES MOINES — Gov. Terry Branstad appointed Duane “D.T.” Magee as the interim head of the Iowa Department of Education Tuesday.
Magee, 42, is the head of the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners, a post he will keep while also serving in the interim spot. The board licenses Iowa teachers and enforces practitioner standards.
“It’s a very temporary interim position,” said Magee, who replaces Department of Education Director Jason Glass. Glass, who has overseen the department since January 2011, leaves this month for a job as superintendent of the Eagle County (Colo.) School District.
Magee has served as executive director of the Board of Educational Examiners since July 2012. Prior to that he was an assistant superintendent of human resources and director of human resources for the Waukee Community School District. He also was a principal in the Harlan Community School District.
