The election is fast approaching and there are many crucial decisions to be made. The Iowa state races for Senate and House of Representatives are too often overlooked. These are the people who set the priorities and policies for our state.
As a retired teacher who has taught in Iowa and Nevada, I rank education as one of the top concerns for our elected officials. In the State Senate District 47, our current Senator Roby Smith declares his support for education, but his actions and voting record do not confirm that. Smith has chosen to back tax cuts that benefit the wealthy and take away funding from our schools He has backed legislation that sends public school money to private schools through vouchers. He has not supported teachers’ right to collective bargaining. Senator Smith gives lip service to education but then fails to back it up with actions.
On Nov. 6, I will be voting for Marie Gleason to keep Iowa’s education system the best it can be. Senator Gleason will advocate and vote to ensure the excellence of our public schools.
