Hockey's beauty is in the strategies of developing teamwork, stick handling, passing and defense. Contrived 3rd period fights detract from that beauty. In the Sept. 26 Quad-City Times, team president Gwen Tombergs said "We made a bigger commitment to giving back to the community."
If the Quad City Storm really want to become a strong local institution that gives back, their league should discourage the fights while bystanders cheer. Another 3rd period token fight broke out Monday night against Peoria. Really. Kids watching adults settle differences with gloves on the ice while the referees stand by until the players drop to the ice is not giving back to the community.
Fighting isn't allowed in junior leagues, neither should it be allowed in the Quad City Storm's Southern Professional Hockey League. Hockey's beauty is in the strategies of developing teamwork, stick handling, passing and defense.
