RALPH GULDAHL... 12/02/37

Young Ralph Guldahl came from behind to win the Western Open in 1936 at Davenport Country Club.

Dates: June 19-21

Purse: $2,145 total, $500 to the winner

Winner: Ralph Guldahl broke the course and tournament record with a 64 in the final round to overcome a three-stroke lead by Ray Mangrum. In the final round, Guldahl made a 40-foot putt on No. 14 and a 50-footer on No. 17.

Other notable entries: Byron Nelson, destined to win 52 tournaments on the PGA Tour, shot a 65 in the final round to finish third.

Crowd: Estimates for the final day, including 36 holes, pegged the attendance at 5,100.

Trivia: Guldahl, the largest player on tour at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, had been forced to give up golf and pawn his clubs only a year earlier … Of the 51 players who made the cut, 13 were amateurs.

Quotable: “Despite the high winds and burnt fairways, the nation’s best have nailed the Old Man to the wood and are walking all over him. They are giving the gallery the greatest golf show they have ever seen.’’ — Davenport Democrat sports editor John O’Donnell
