CEDAR RAPIDS — Keith Ingraham doubled in the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning after Andrew Hegland tied the game in the seventh as Davenport Central rallied for a dramatic 5-3 victory over Cedar Rapids Jefferson in the Class 4A baseball playoffs Monday night.
The Blue Devils (15-18), facing Jefferson ace Chase Keeney, trailed 3-0 after five innings but found a way to win.
They now play at Cedar Rapids Washington on Wednesday with a berth in the state tournament on the line.
Jefferson (23-17) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a three-run home run by Matt Culver and with Keeney (8-0, 1.17 earned-run average) on the mound, the Devils’ chances seemed bleak.
They scored a run on an error in the sixth before Connor Hayes and Elijah Mitchell singled to start the seventh. With runners at second and third and two outs, Hegland stroked a 3-2 pitch from Keeney into left field to tie the game.
In the eighth inning, Central got its first two runners on base on a single and an error, and Ingraham brought both of them in with his double.
Jefferson got a baserunner on in the bottom of the eighth on an infield single before the Blue Devils got the final out.
Solon 6, Central DeWitt 4: Central DeWitt built an early 4-0 lead but couldn’t hold on in its Class 3A substate semifinal.
Solon broke loose for five runs on six hits in the fifth inning to wipe out the Sabers’ lead. Luke Ira hit a three-run home run and Zach Wegmann followed with a two-run double. Ira singled in an insurance run in the sixth.
The Spartans (26-13) will take on Marion (30-10) in the substate final on Wednesday.
DeWitt (25-16) scored two runs in the first on a single by Austin Weiss and a wild pitch, then scratched out single runs in the second and third innings.
