MARION, Iowa — After one stroke kept the Pleasant Valley boys golf team out of the state tournament last year, the Spartans did not have to sweat it out this time.
With four players shooting 80 or better, Pleasant Valley fired a 311 Monday at the Class 4A district meet to tie Marshalltown for the top spot. Based on an 81 from its No. 5 golfer, PV won the tiebreaker and the district crown at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
PV advances to the 36-hole state tournament Friday and Saturday at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville. It will be the program's first state appearance since 2015.
The Spartans came into the district tournament with the ninth best 18-hole scoring average in Iowa at 312.09.
Fueled by a 36 on the front nine, sophomore Jack Dumas paced the Spartans with a 76. Jack Roemer turned in 77, Joe Logan had 78 and Nathan Tillman posted 80 for PV. Lucas Wood had an 81, 12 strokes better than Marshalltown's No. 5 to break the tie.

It was more than enough as the top three teams from the 13-team district qualify for the state tournament. Cedar Rapids Washington snared the last spot with a 325 total.
Marshalltown's JD Pollard was the individual medalist with a 74. Dumas was in a group tied for fourth.
Assumption finished 10th with a 369 total and Muscatine was 11th at 372. Evan Lystuik led the Knights with an 85. Nate Diercks turned in a 90 and James Solt recorded 91 for the Muskies.
The three Davenport public schools, Bettendorf, Clinton and North Scott compete in a 4A district tournament at The Meadows in Dubuque on Tuesday.
