Bettendorf came home from the Iowa girls state swimming and diving meet earlier this season with another third-place trophy.

That team success has the Bulldogs at the forefront of this year's Quad-City Times All-Metro team.

Led by sophomore Arianna Ottavianelli, coach Mike Ahrens' team has five swimmers and a diver on the first team.

Alexis Beine, Megan Greenley, Lauren Tumey, Emily VanDeWiele and freshman diver Sydney Hanson join Ottavianelli on the top team.

Pleasant Valley's Aviana Zahara and Libby Staver are on the first team along with Davenport West swimmer Courtney Schaeffer.

United Township's Brandi LaFountaine, Rock Island's Mikayla DePover and Moline diver Taylor Puglisi round out the first team.

Beine, DePover, Ottavianelli, VanDeWiele and Zahara are repeat selections in the first team.

First team


Alexis Beine, jr., Bettendorf: Swam on state runner-up 200 free relay and fifth place 200 medley relay along with placing in top 12 of 200 IM (ninth, 2:10.96) and 100 breaststroke (11th, 1:07.69).

Mikayla DePover, jr., Rock Island: Illinois state qualifier in the 100 breaststroke, she swam season-best 1:07.31 at Big Six meet. She also had conference-best time in 100 butterfly (59.85). 

Megan Greenley, so., Bettendorf: Anchored third place 200 free relay and fifth place 200 medley relay at state. The sprinter also was 11th at state in 50 free (24.76 seconds) and 12th in 100 free (53.75). 

Brandi LaFountaine, jr., United Township: Three-sport athlete and Illinois State softball commit finished 20th at Illinois state meet in 100 backstroke (57.77). She won event at Big Six and was second in 50 freestyle. 

Arianna Ottavianelli, so., Bettendorf: Posted the top finish of any Quad-Cities swimmer at state meet. She was state runner-up and set new school record in 200 IM (2:04.82), took second in 100 breaststroke (1:03.94) and swam on two top-five relays. 

Courtney Schaeffer, sr., Davenport West: Selected as the MAC swimmer of the year, Schaeffer swam in two individual events at state meet -- ninth in 50 free (24.51) and 14th in 100 free (54.12). 

Libby Staver, jr., Pleasant Valley: Earned a spot on the state podium in four events -- fourth in 200 medley relay, fourth in 200 free (1:52.94), fifth in 500 free (5:02.59) and sixth in 400 free relay. 

Lauren Tumey, jr., Bettendorf: Finished sixth at state meet in 100 breaststroke (1:06.05), the second best time in MAC behind Ottavianelli. She also had a season-best time of 2:11.80 in 200 IM.

Emily VanDeWiele, jr., Bettendorf: Powered Bettendorf to third-palce state finish with four top-seven finishes -- third in 200 free relay, sixth in 200 free (1:53.19), sixth in 100 free (52.04) and seventh in 400 free relay.

Aviana Zahara, sr., Pleasant Valley: Former Alleman swimmer was state runner-up in 100 backstroke (56.51), swam backstroke on fourth place 200 medley relay, was on sixth place 400 free relay and took seventh in 50 free (24.35).


Sydney Hanson, fr., Bettendorf: Burst on the scene this year to win regional meet (463.55 for 11 dives) and took fourth at state meet (457.85) to help Bulldogs take third as team at state.

Taylor Puglisi, so., Moline: State qualifier compiled a 419 total for 11 dives at Big Six meet, just off conference record, and captured a sectional crown (343.90), the fourth straight for a Moline diver.
