Girls tennis

PV perfect on opening day: The Pleasant Valley girls tennis team did not drop a match Monday at the Mississippi Athletic Conference tournament.

PV was 12-for-12 in singles matches and won all six doubles matches to accumulate 18 points at the North Scott tennis complex. Clinton is in second place with 12 points, followed by Davenport Assumption (9.5), Muscatine (8) and Bettendorf (7.5).

The Spartans, who didn't even drop a set in any match, need to win just one match Tuesday to secure their fourth straight outright conference title.

Bettendorf's Emilia Porubcin will meet PV's Lily Feldman in a rematch of last year's No. 1 singles final. Porubcin and Feldman did not drop a set Monday.

The Bulldogs and Spartans also will square off at No. 2 singles with Hannah Borgh and Hannah Humes.

In the No. 1 doubles final, Porubcin and Borgh face Feldman and Kayla Nutt. The finals start at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Clinton.

Central names new coach: Pending board approval, Brian Heller has been hired as the new girls swim coach and assistant boys swim coach at Davenport Central.

Heller has spent the past 22 years as the head boys and girls swim coach at Davenport West. He replaces Paul Eure, who stepped down after this past season with his family relocating to the Des Moines area.
