The Quad-City Cobras 14-under baseball team completed an undefeated run Sunday through the American Amateur Youth Baseball Association (AAYBA) Platinum division national tournament in St. Louis. The Cobras, who went 7-0 in the tournament, won the title with a 3-0 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies of Missouri.
The Bettendorf Diamond Kings won the national championship of the AAYBA 14-under Gold division. They advanced through bracket play with victories over the Northwest Ohio Wildcats, the O'Fallon (Ill.) Panthers and the St Louis Eagles before claiming a 4-3 win over the Wilson (Tenn.) Wildcats in the title game.
The 15-16-year-old all-star team from the Eastern Iowa Colt and Palomino League breezed through the Colt League regional tournament in Omaha last weekend and will now play in the zone tournament in Grand Ledge, Mich., starting July 28. The team, including players from Davenport, Bettendorf, Eldridge, Clinton and Grand Mound, won five straight games by a combined score of 60-12 to win the regional. In the final game it claimed a 13-4 victory over Millard (Neb.) Red, which was 28-0 going into the game.
The Davenport East Little League 11-under team won its district title and will begin play in the state tournament on Friday.
The Quad-City Heat 10-under team finished second in the USSSA state tournament earlier this month.
Moline American won the 10-under district Little League title Monday in Milan and will begin sectional play in Freeport, Ill., on Saturday.
The Moline 16-under Little League team won a sectional title for the fourth straight year and will advance to the state tournament.
The Moline National 11-under team, the defending state champions, won the district title by defeating Rock Island on Saturday. It moves to the sectionals, which begin Saturday in Milan.
The Moline 14-under Little League team played Beardstown in the championship game of the sectional tournament in Mt. Sterling on Tuesday night. The team won its first game in the tournament Saturday by a 34-0 score.
