PEORIA, Ill. — It took one exhibition game for Taylor McCloy to show what he is capable of.

The Quad-City Storm rookie scored a hat trick in just over a period of work, but the Storm dropped the preseason game 4-3 in overtime at the Peoria Civic Center.

Will Smith scored the game-winning goal with 1-minute, 44-seconds left in the overtime period.

McCloy, who played four seasons at Division III Adrian College, scored his first goal at 8:07 in the first period, then netted his second at 14:26. Dalton Mills had assists on both goals as the Storm went into the first intermission up 2-0.

McCloy finished the hat trick 39 seconds into the second period; then Peoria countered.

After the Storm swapped starting goaltender Chris Paulin — who stopped all 18 shots he faced — for Matt Leon, the Rivermen got on the board with a goal from Cody Smith at 11:24 in the second period.

Mike Gurtler cut the score to 3-2 at 17:09 in the second period. Vincent Beaudry tied the game at 2:15 in the third period.

Leon made 25 saves on 29 shots in relief for the Storm. The Storm were outshot 47-26 in the game.

The Storm's season opener is on Oct. 20 against the Rivermen at the TaxSlayer Center.
