Jeff and Michelle Huber wanted to create an outdoor patio centered around a firepit that would extend the season for outdoor entertaining and still was safe for their 2-year-old daughter Madelyn.
The Hubers have several gas fireplaces in their four-bedroom Bettendorf home, but for outsisde, they wanted a traditional wood-burning firepit.
After obtaining bids and designs from several companies, the Hubers choose New Image Landscape in Bettendorf, owned and operated by Dave Mohr. They said the price and design stood out, and they have been very happy with the results.
The balcony of the two-story home now overlooks the circular-patterned patio and firepit in the Huber’s backyard. Although the circular pattern is not what the Hubers had in mind initially, they took a chance on Mohr’s unique design. Now they say it is their favorite part of the project.

Q: What did you have done?
A: We had a slab of concrete here, so that was taken out and the patio was put in with the firepit and columns, seating wall and accent lighting. We also had some trees put in and the landscape around.
Q: What made you decide to have the work done?
A: The backyard was kind of plain. We plan on being here for a while, and I wanted a place where we can hang out an entertain friends and family.
Q: What were some of the choices you made?
A: Originally, I had kind of an idea in my head of what I wanted. Dave’s design was pretty much on queue with what I wanted. We had a couple of bids, but this one fit what I thought I wanted overall.
This design was actually Dave’s choice — our original design didn’t incorporate the circular pattern. It was his suggestion, and we went on a leap of faith, but I think it came out well.

Q: How do you like the end results?
A: It has an elegant look to it. We love it. (The circular pattern) is the best part. Especially standing up on the deck and looking down. It looks incredible from up there. At the end of the day we like to entertain and hang out by a fire.

Q: How long did the project take?
A: A project like this would usually take about four or five days, but because of the rain this project took a little longer to complete.
Q: Is the depth pretty standard for firepits?
A: It just depends on what people like. I wanted to keep this one down because they have a young daughter. We are going to get a grate and raise it up a little.
Q: How long should it last?
A: It should be here as long as they are. I put concrete under it so you could park a car on the patio. Most people put rock and sand under it; I put concrete under it. That way they don’t have to worry about weeds and it just holds up a lot better.
I also raised it up to keep the water away from it.

A: We actually went with a different style of brick — this has more of a circular pattern to it. This had just come out and I told them, “I think you guys would really like this.” I think they are pretty happy with it. We went with a lighter color too to match the back of the house. You’re never going to match anything perfectly, but this is pretty close.
