The Bechtel Trusts Senior Bix is noncompetitive, but that didn’t dampen two-time champ Mike Mallon’s runner's edge.
Mallon, 59, has run the Quad-City Times Bix 7 a total of 10 times and holds the record for his age division. His favorite part about running is the competition — with others and himself.

He’s won his age group, 55-59, for the past three years, and in 2022 he set a record time of 40:56. Mallon said what drives his competitiveness is protecting his age group records.
Mallon, who works as an assistant race director for the Quad-Cities Marathon, started running in high school. He said he wasn’t the right size for other sports and found a home in running.

“When I found running, it just kind of clicked right away,” he said.

Mallon began a running group called the QC Faster Master. The group has five teams entered into the Bix, and Mallon said the race is a collective effort.
Mallon travels to compete in many races, including the Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago and the Illinois Marathon in Champaign, but the Bix means more than the others, he said. There’s a level of pride that comes with performing well in your hometown, he said.

The Bix is also unique to these races because of the challenge it presents, Mallon said, such as competing with some of the best runners in the world and the course.
With seven miles of hills and turns, the Bix is a battle, he said.
“I get chills just standing at the starting line,” Mallon said. “It’s a big deal and it’s right here.”
