The Maynard, performance and event venue, opens in Muscatine
A historic space in downtown Muscatine has a new life as The Maynard, a private event and performance venue located upstairs in the historic former Mississippi Hotel building, formerly known as the Overlook Ballroom, at 101 W. Mississippi Drive.
The space is owned by Chelsea Harms, whose dream of creating beautiful food and meaningful gatherings has grown into something even bigger.
In 2024, Harms launched Cheers & Graze with Charm, creating handcrafted charcuterie boards and grazing tables for weddings, celebrations, and special events throughout Eastern Iowa. As demand quickly grew, so did the need for a commercial kitchen.
That search led her to this historic downtown space.
With a vision that extended beyond a kitchen, Chelsea transformed the building into The Maynard—a venue where people can gather, celebrate, and create memories.
Today, The Maynard is available for private events of all kinds, from bridal and baby showers to birthdays, corporate gatherings, cocktail parties, and intimate celebrations, blending historic charm with modern events.
“In true speakeasy fashion, The Maynard doesn’t keep traditional business hours. Instead, keep an eye out for our signature red patio lights. When the red lights are on, we’re open. Stop in for a glass of wine, a cold beer, or simply good company," The Maynard states on their website.
"Whether you’re joining us for an open night or celebrating one of life’s biggest moments, we can’t wait to welcome you to The Maynard."
"What makes this space even more special is its history. The building was once the old Mississippi Hotel in Muscatine, Iowa — a landmark along the city’s historic riverfront. During the height of Mississippi River commerce, Muscatine was a busy stop for steamboats, merchants, and travelers, and hotels like this played a huge role in welcoming that constant flow of life and movement through the city," Harms said in Facebook post on July 26."
"To imagine all the balls, weddings, and conversations about this growing city that once filled these walls gives me all the feelings. I feel so honored to carry that history forward by creating a warm, historic gathering place where new memories can be made in the city I call home."
The Maynard is available to rent for private gatherings, bridal showers, engagement celebrations, parties, community socials and lectures.
