MUSCATINE Iowa – This summer, Musser Public Library will implement several service adjustments resulting from a combined $104,000 reduction in government funding, including $54,000 from Muscatine County and $50,000 in City Capital Outlay. These changes will take effect July 1, 2026.
Service changes taking effect in July
Beginning in July, the library will:
Close on Sundays, ending weekend service one day earlier.
Reduce weeknight hours, closing at 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Discontinue three digital resources: Freegal, Heritage Quest, and Morningstar.
Reduce the materials budget, affecting new books, media, and other collection items.
Suspend select programs, including Adult Trivia Night and the children’s program Pages for All Ages.
Library leadership emphasized that none of these cuts were easy. Each decision was made to protect the services that matter most to Muscatine residents:
Core library access
Children’s and teen programming
Essential collections
The staff who deliver these services
Musser Public Library currently serves more than 18,500 active cardholders across Muscatine City, Muscatine County, and surrounding townships.
“Our commitment to every one of you remains unchanged,” said Robert Fiedler, Musser Public Library director.
Funding advocacy and community support
The Musser Library is actively engaged in ongoing conversations with city and county leaders about restoring funding in future budget cycles. Staff will continue to advocate for sustainable support that preserves access, programming, and community impact.
Residents who wish to share their thoughts with local leaders are encouraged to make their voices heard.
Despite these reductions, the library’s mission remains clear: to keep Musser Public Library strong, accessible, and welcoming for everyone in Muscatine.
“Everything we do is guided by that commitment,” said Fiedler. “Musser Public Library is not going anywhere. Even with these adjustments, we remain open, fully staffed, and committed to connecting you with the resources, programs, and community you can count on.”
The public can also help by joining the Friends of Muscatine Library, a separate nonprofit organization made up of passionate library supporters. The group raises funds and awareness to help enhance library programming, support community events, and meet other library needs, including physical resources.
